Everyone from NZ arrived in Japan at 4.15pm on Wednesday, 21st March. After 12 hours on a plane, Narita Airport was definitely a welcome sight! At the airport we were met by AFS Japan staff and taken to the Hotel Nikko Narita where we spent the night and rested after our flights. I don`t really think the other hotel guests new what hit them when 244 AFS students descended on the hotel! After a night of luxury, we were all split in three groups for the different arrival orientations in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. I went to the Tokyo orientation. All of those going to Tokyo were then taken to a youth centre in downtown Tokyo. After settling into our rooms we were divided into 12 groups for orientation activities. I was in Group four which consisted of three students from NZ, three from the USA and four from Australia. The most awesome thing about the orientation was that we got to make friends with people from all over the world! After three days of fun in Tokyo, and having made life-long friendships, we all went our separate ways to meet our host families in different parts of Japan. A group of 14 of us travelled on the Shinkansen (bullet train) North-West to Gunma and Niigata Prefectures. I am in Niigata Chapter with five other students from the USA, Thailand and Panama. At Niigata Station I was met by my Host Mother, Little Sister and LP and taken back to their house in Gosen City. The next day, I received my school uniform from my LP. It is sooooo formal! It is a black blazer and trousers and a white long-sleeved business shirt! The blazer is quite weird, it has a collar which stands up and buttons right up the neck. I`m not sure whether or not I get to keep it but I hope I can bring it back to NZ to show people how lucky they are with their school uniforms! lol. Nothing much else has really happened yet, I don`t start school until Friday 6th of April (which seems like a really odd day to start!). As soon as I have more to report, I will write again.
